Page 1 of 3 Isolation The bible speaks of isolation as both
bad and good. It is sinful for a believer or community of believers
to isolate themselves from other believers. However, when a follower
of God is isolated because of righteous distinction, the Lord is
pleased. It is important for God's children to discern the impetus
for separation. The motivation determines a course of unity or
disengagement.
Bad Isolation
Proverbs 18:1 one who isolates himself
pursues [selfish] desires; he rebels against sound judgment (Holman
CSB). Isolation is a fertile environment for the development of
selfish ambitions, unsound doctrine and unhealthy independence.
Sometimes the act of separation can be obvious and defined. Other
times a long process of small separations can eventually create a
sizable rift. Either scenario is displeasing to God. The heart of
estrangement creates strife, alienation and ruptures in the
fellowship.
An example of ungodly separation is 3
John 1:9-10.
I wrote something
to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among
them, does not receive us. This is why, if I come, I will remind him
of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he
is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome the
brothers himself, but he even stops those who want to do so and
expels them from the church. (Holman CSB)
Diotrephes' isolation stems from his
desire to be first. The overwhelming pride and competitive spirit of
Diotrephes moves him to slander brothers and cuts off those who want
to maintain unity. The Restoration Movement has seen its share of
“Diotrephes” like characters and yet we remain unwary of them. We
are sentimental, unsure or lazy when dealing with such individuals.
The emotional, spiritual and intellectual effort which needs to be
exerted to deal with the divisive proves to be to great a cost and we
allow separatists and megalomaniacs to roam freely among our
fellowship. Let us be decisive and quick when dealing with these
wolves.
