Page 2 of 5 Normally, one will not state their refusal to wholeheartedly pursue pleasing God. Subtle shifts in thinking and focus are more likely the path of falling away from Yahweh. The boredom begins to show when the questions drift from “Who is God and how can I please him?” to questions about minutiae. We start to nit-pick the Bible to support “Who is right?” debates. 1 Timothy 6:4 says, “He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions.” The parallel dynamic in a marriage is the spouse who points what the other does wrong and must be right all the time. Ongoing controversies and quarrels within the body of Christ are a sign of sickness.
The “seven year itch” is a term used to describe the desire to look for an adulterous relationship. After seven years of marriage one of the spouses becomes bored and begins to look for excitement elsewhere. This is the excuse the world has built to justify infidelity, however it can have application in our faithfulness with God. After time, the novelty of our baptism wears off. The daily “grind” of Christianity sets in. Pray, read the Bible, reach out, help the poor; until the routine is by rote. That does sound boring! We think we know it all and there is nothing left to learn or explore in our spirituality. How untrue – a lie from Satan to be sure.
