Page 1 of 3 Decision Making If ever you have found yourself frustrated by a seemingly impossible
decision and have not been able to perceive God's preferred direction
for your life, this is a book for you. “Where should I go to school?”
“Who should I marry?” “Where should I live?” These are some of the
questions which “Decision Making and the Will of God” deals with. But
don't expect a pat formula to divine the answers, Decision Making
challenges the typical Calvinistic approaches to exacting an answer
from God. It even goes so far as to say there is no answer (from the
Lord) on many of our non-moral day to day choices.
Garry Friesen and Robin Maxson have assembled a thorough, thoughtful and biblical approach to making decisions, both big and small. The opening narrative is representative of typical questions concerning God's will for our (my) life. As the characters attempt to help one another with their life changing decisions (marriage, career, mission work, etc...) they employ methods common to all of us; prayer and advice. They also utilize techniques such as “throwing out a fleece” and “open door / close door” and waiting for the Spirit to guide them.
Friesen and Maxson quickly disassemble and debunk much of the “traditional view” of decision making in the next section of the book. “Throwing out a fleece”, “open door / close door” and waiting for the Spirit to speak are not valid biblical methods for determining God's will for the individual. Point by point and scripture by scripture they prove the bible does not support an individual's ability to get an answer concerning specific decisions in one's life.
