There are too many features in the HISB to list, but there are some worth mentioning. If you have not used a Holman translation, it is a joy. If you use an New International Version (NIV) as your primary bible, consider a Holman as your home study sword. I have found the Holman to be free of some of the biases and elementary vocabulary of the NIV.
Each book begins with key texts, terms and a summary. Major themes are covered in the next section. Literary features and historical settings give the reader adequate background information. Two preliminary sections for each book which are useful are “Christ in [fill in name of book]” and “God's Story”. The former ties the book to Jesus whether Old or New Testament. God's Story places the book in the “big picture” of the bible. Both are great for keeping a healthy perspective on a relationship with God and the importance of the Messiah.
The maps, charts and reconstructions are excellent. All of them are quality and full of color. The time line charts are especially helpful for discovering contemporaries and overlapping books. Maps are always a favorite and coupled with the charts, one can get a good feel for the time period.
The sidebars also offer good tidbits about events, characters, objects, places, etc... Many of these are interesting and will compliment your bible study. The pictures scattered throughout are a mixed bag. Some are relevant and some are not. The entire book is colorful with highlights, sidebars, graphics and pictures.
If you want a good all-in-one lesson builder and study bible – The Holman Illustrated Study Bible will fit the bill. If your on the road and want the benefit of a study library with you, the HISB is your ticket. I recommend it as an addition to one's bible study arsenal.
