News - Progress

ImageThe Christian Chronicle reports on progress in overcoming the racial divide in an Atlanta area church of Christ. The article is an encouraging history of one congregation's journey.

Does segregation still exist in Restoration churches? Is it because of the sometime focused local outreach or something less noble? What is your experience?

Atlanta

During the 90's, the Atlanta Church of Christ started encouraging parents of high school students to move into certain school districts to get their kids in the same schools. For the most part, those who could afford to move did, and those who could not afford to move did not. In my area that resulted in one congregation becoming almost 100% black, as the whites moved to the selected school district. Today that congregation is nearly 100% black. Some of the ACOC congregations are diverse today (mine is about 50% black) but several are almost all black, and several are almost all white. territories overlap, but people choose where they want to worship and in some cases that has led to a lack of diversity.
