Victor Knowles reports in the Christian Standard on cooperation between
churches of Christ and Christian Churches since the 2006 North American
Christian Convention (NACC). Victor is president of Peace On Earth
Ministries (POEM) which advocates unity within the Restoration
Movement. His observations are encouraging.
Knowles points out several areas where congregations are cooperating. Through Christian Relief Fund, churches are helping the fight against AIDS in Africa. Other congregations are combining marriage classes or worship services. Missions coordination is developing. A joint unity website has been launched by several from both camps, www.unity-christian.com. Some congregations are merging.
Not all is good news, and Victor Knowles, although faithful about future unity, does not bury his head in the sand. He acknowledges opposition to unity progress. Opposition, however, can not stop the momentum which has been generated this past year.
This is certainly great news for those in the churches of Christ and Christian Churches. I am disappointed that I have not seen more unity activity from the International Church of Christ (ICOC). Since the 2004 “Faithful Conversations” at Abilene University where many apologies were made, little has happened to encourage cooperation between the ICOC and other Restoration Movement groups.
- What do think are the ingredients for unity between churches?
- Can ongoing cooperation become a reality?
- How can the ICOC better pursue unity opportunities?
