ImageRacial issues within God’s church are sometimes taboo. There is an acceptance of division along ethnic lines in the name of geography and proximity to the place of worship. Sometimes proximity is the factor, other times it is a convenient excuse.

Bobby Ross Jr. of the Christian Chronicle has written an editorial addressing this issue within the church of Christ.

“And it would be truly marvelous if Hispanic church members offered their assistance, too. In Tampa, the lack of Spanish speakers certainly hurt the effort to share Christ in some neighborhoods.

Earl Wilson, a member of the Gateway church in Homestead, Fla., said he knocked just as many white doors in Tampa as black. But the people behind those doors couldn’t help but notice that all the campaigners were black.

“It makes a difference,” he said.”

Division impedes our evangelism, no matter what level of zeal and effort we can muster. The world takes notice, they are not stupid and they realize division is not a Godly quality; why can’t we?

My experience

My wife and I (both as white as rice) have visited black congregations and have always received a very warm welcome. OTOH the fact that the blacks and whites choose to attend separate churches (primarily for cultural reasons IMO) creates an unnecessary barrier with outsiders.

Where I am a member, we have blacks, whites, hispanics, and any other race that might attend. All are welcome. We are predominantly white. God doesn't see the color of our skin, or the shape of our eyes. He sees what is in our hearts.
My Experience

My wife and I attended 98% Black congregation in Nebraska. I was with a Black brother doing house to house visitation BTW I am totally white Irishman! At this particular house the husband pointed at the Black brother and said to me "This man is black!" Looking at both the brother and the man I said,"He's black but he's my spiritual brother!" I don't look at outward appearance of anyone but the man or woman who is inside, the NEW CREATURE 1 Cor 5:17. I feel that our Ethnic brothers and sisters need to find in us the NEW CREATURE and we in turn need to seek out the NEW CREATURE in our ethnic brothers and sisters. It is a MUST!
