What is good? Write down several things that you consider “good” characteristics.
Let's look at a couple of characteristics of Jesus and see if they are “good” by our definitions.
Righteous Anger
John 2:14-16
14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves,
and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out
of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he
scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
16To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you
turn my Father's house into a market!"
● What are the conditions of this anger?
● When do we usually get angry?
● How is this different then the usual portrayal of Jesus?
Division Luke 12:51-53 51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." ● What kind of division is Jesus talking about? ● Why choose these relations as examples? ● Why isn't everyone happy when you decide to follow Jesus?
Hate Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. ● What does Jesus mean by hate? (It is a comparison) ● How does this fit with Luke 12:51-53? ● Who takes priority in our life? Spouse, boy/girlfriend, children, God?
Overwhelmed Mark 14:34 "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch." ● Have you ever been overwhelmed? ● What is it that triggers you being overwhelmed? ● Why is Jesus overwhelmed? ● How does he deal with it?
Conclusion: ● Let's reconsider our picture of Jesus. ● Is he who we think he is? ● What sources have painted our current picture of Jesus? ● Are we allowing the bible to paint the accurate picture of Jesus? ● Let's dive into the bible this week and either redefine our image of Jesus or validate the one we have.
