ImageRomans 6 tells us the deep significance of immersion.
“3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Is the author, Paul, speaking literally or metaphorically? I believe it is both. One who has been faithfully baptized for forgiveness of sins and changed their mindset is on a course for resurrection. However, transformation must accompany the cleansing waters. Once our old selves are drowned, what surfaces should be a new creation; “7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.”

Baptism without transformation is a travesty and impotent. Our sinful nature should be defeated and our ownership transferred from ourselves to Christ; “18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

When examining my or others conversions, do I look for proper mode and method? Two questions, a good confession and decisive dunk – is that the evidence of a Christian? Perhaps the evidence of a faithful baptism is found more in the transformation which follows, sometimes over a lifetime.
