What is the “Good News” and am I
preaching it?
It is easy for me to lose track of
what is important and what is peripheral in what I share with others.
Too often I catch myself sharing about church or honestly, church
culture, than about Jesus, the resurrection and the kingdom of God.
Below are some bullets from a lesson / devotional I gave on the Good
News. It opened my eyes and was a bucket of cold water on my soul.
Acts 5:42 Day after day, in
the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped
teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
Acts 8:12 But when they
believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of
God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men
and women.
Acts 8:35 Then Philip began
with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about
Jesus.
Acts 10:36 You know the
message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of
peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
Acts 11:20 Some of them,
however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to
speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord
Jesus.
Acts 17:18 A group of
Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of
them asked, "What is this babbler trying to say?" Others
remarked, "He seems to be advocating foreign gods." They
said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus
and the resurrection.
What
are some components of the Good News?
Jesus
is the Messiah (Christ, anointed, savior)
Luke
19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
John
12:47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep
them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world,
but to save it.
Kingdom
of God (The church on earth is part of the kingdom of God)
Jesus
is Lord (Jesus is not only my rescuer and savior but also my master
and king . I cannot claim to know to Jesus if both the elements are
not part of our relationship.)
John
14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
John 14:21 Whoever has my
commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves
me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show
myself to him."
John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If
anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love
him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
John 14:24 He who does not
love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my
own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
John 15:10 If you obey my
commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my
Father's commands and remain in his love.
1 John 2:5 But if anyone obeys
his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we
know we are in him:
1 John 5:3 This is love for
God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
Resurrection - 1 Corinthians 15:13-14 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. -
Acts 2:32-42
32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand 35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '
36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."
40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
