As Jesus taught during the Sermon on
the Mount he touched on many subjects – hatred, lust, prayer,
fasting, etc... However, Jesus did not fail to address a two key
elements which retard faith – love of money and worry. In Matthew 6
(19-34), Jesus connects these two sins.
Matthew 6:19-24 tells us that the love
of money (and “treasures”, stuff) can move our heart, darken our
light and redefine who we serve. How can we tell if we have a love of
money? Here is a short (but certainly not comprehensive) list:
Lots of debt
A storage unit for the stuff that
won't fit in the house
Junk (bought it, don't use it, it
sits around)
Not giving generously to the Lord
Not giving sacrificially to the
Lord
Worry
The last point is worth noting. In
Matthew 6:25, Jesus segues from money to worry, but indicates worry
(fear of lacking necessities) drives us to a love of money. When we
indulge in worry, we eat away at our service to God and replace it
with service to money (Mt 6:24). Worrying does not help (Mt 6:27) and
displays a lack of trust in God.
How do we overcome? God tells us in
Matthew 6:33 to, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his
righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (ESV)
This does not merely mean for us to go to church and try to be good.
No, God wants us to have His will as our top priority when budgeting,
scheduling, spending, working, planning, giving, helping, etc... In a
marriage, nothing should compare to the attention and priority we
give our spouse. The same holds true for our relationship with God,
nothing should come close to Him in priority.
Are you worrying? Stop and start
trusting. Easy enough to say but hard to implement. Through prayer
and the power of God's Spirit we can overcome our indulgence in
worry.
