Romans 10:17 – Consequently faith
comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the
word of Christ.
Many issues in one's life can boil down
to a lack of faith. Issues in relationships, marriage, overcoming
sin, zeal, compassion, evangelism, etc... are faith driven activities
and characteristics. We want our relationships to be strong, our
marriages enjoyable and radiant, our sin eliminated and our
evangelism effective. However, what are the typical routes we take to
accomplish these goals? Work harder, get input from other Christians,
counseling, guilt or feel bad about not accomplishing what we set out
to do. We are not attacking the root of the problem; faith.
Whatever the issue I face, Bible study
is part of the answer. Romans 10:17 tells me my faith depends on
hearing the message of Christ. Where do I hear the message? From the
Bible. If the issue is my marriage, then part of the answer is Bible
study. If my issue is overcoming sin, then part of the answer is
Bible study. Faith and Bible study are inextricably linked.
Before I will entertain counseling
someone on their marriage, evangelism, sin or other spiritual (and
non-spiritual) subject, I ask the question, “How is your Bible
study?” If the answer is weak or inconsistent then my advice is to
go read and study God's word. Then we can talk. Otherwise, if the
individual is not listening to God, what difference will it make what
I say? Let us see our faith in light of our
Bible study and be encouraged to deepen our study of God's word with
greater consistency allowing it to penetrate our hearts and build our
faith.
