"Acts of the Apostles 22 - (KJV - King James Version)." Blue Letter Bible. 1996-2011. 21 Jul 2011. < http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Act&c=22&t=KJV >)
So, why does the HCSB read as follows:
Acts 22:16 And now, why delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on His name.
The word, 'by' does not appear, nor is it implied in the Greek. The cause / effect relationship which the Holman presents is calling on His name will wash sins away. However, the original states that the actions are simultaneous (calling and baptism) which will cause the sins to be washed away. Other translations agree.
Acts 22:16
New International Version (NIV)
16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’
Acts 22:16
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
16and now, why tarriest thou? having risen, baptize thyself, and wash away thy sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.
By translating Acts 22:16 as the Holman does, baptism is discounted as part of the salvation process.
