Divorce & Remarriage: A Redemptive Theology by Rubel Shelly
I decided to read this book due to a large number of people in my immediate fellowship who were contemplating separation or divorce or had been divorced. Although the topic was of interest, I must admit trepidation about the author, Rubel Shelly and his reputation as liberal in his theology. This book is not liberal in its theology, but consists of sound biblical interpretation and reasoning. Anyone who counsels or leads a group in which marriage (divorce and separation) topics arise should read this book.
At no point does Shelly seem soft on the spiritual and natural impact of divorce. He does not advocate a cavalier or casual attitude toward separation and divorce, but a thoughtful biblical approach to reconciliation if possible. The author offers a hope to those who are divorced that they will not be caught in a situational paradox where their status as, “adulterer” is locked and redemption is not attainable.
The book is available here.
