What I Like About You! When looking at someone do you find
yourself criticizing (or sizing up) that individual? Is our natural
tendency to find the best in others? With those we love dearly, do we
overlook offensive habits, egregious behavior and extend more grace? Is
it possible for us to widen our circle of love (and hearts) to see the
best in others we do not like?
Acts 13 22 After removing Saul, he made David
their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of
Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to
do.' God found David to be a man after his own heart. What a
compliment! Was it because David was always right? Was it because David
was always righteous? Was it because of David’s consistent humility?
Each of these questions can be answered with a resounding, “No!” David
found himself in sin with Bathsheba and the census. His family was
dysfunctional. Would David be someone we would consider sharing
fellowship with by what he has done?
God’s heart has more vision and is more gracious than our own.
Listen to the words He uses to describe his vision for David. “…a man after my own heart…” and “…he will do everything I want him to do.”
What did God see in David? God saw David’s faithful perfection. God did
not look only at David’s behavioral or moral perfection. The Lord put
great value on David’s persistence despite setbacks and sin. David
constantly returned to God with a deep faith. David knows of God’s
grace and nature. David was faithful.
What do we value in our brothers and sisters? Is it good behavior,
morals, hard work, intelligence, agreement, etc…? Loving the brother or
sister who does not possess these qualities and yet is faithful is the
challenge. Can we step out of ourselves and view them as God does, with
vision and depth? If we can see people with vision and God’s
faithfulness, there is better opportunity for unity.
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
