God wants Unity Godliness will Cause Division
Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
1 Corinthians 11:17-19 17In the following directives I have no praise
for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18In the first
place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are
divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19No doubt there
have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's
approval.
If there are those who are godly in their actions
and those who are not, there will be division. If there are believers
and unbelievers there will be division. God promises the consequence of
separation if one is godly and attempts to be bonded with the ungodly.
2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what
do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can
light have with darkness?
Unfortunately the concept of division caused because one chooses to
follow God and those who don’t has mutated into something completely
different. These passages are liberally applied to those with differing
opinions. It is not spiritual differentiation, it is an intellectual
sifting.
Selfishness
James 4:1-3 1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they
come from your desires that battle within you? 2You want something but
don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want.
You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives,
that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
Agendas (other than God’s) can break our fellowship. Unfaithful prayers
and faithless requests squander our patience with others and God. The
pursuit of pleasure consumes and there is a wake of destruction behind.
Instigators and Warnings
Romans 16:17 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause
divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the
teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
Titus 3:10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.
3 John 1:9-10 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be
first, will have nothing to do with us. 10So if I come, I will call
attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not
satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops
those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.
There will be those who will attempt to pull apart the body of Christ (Proverbs 16:28
A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.). They are a cancer. The warning is to keep away from them. Their tongues drip the sweet poison of gossip (Proverbs 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts.)
What God Wants
1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there
may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in
mind and thought.
1 Corinthians 12:24b-26 24b But God has combined the members of the
body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that
there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have
equal concern for each other. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers
with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
God’s unity is in mind and thought. God’s wants unity at an empathetic
level, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is
honored, every part rejoices with it.” His call is for us to be
spiritual, put away our selfishness, faithfully pray, be on guard for
the perverse and to come together to be a working body.
