Verse 5 introduces God and His response. He recognizes the power in unity, “…as one people … nothing they plan …will be impossible...”
even if fueled by ungodly motives. Great results do not necessarily
mean they were blessed by God. Organization, discipline and vision
without God can produce impressive fruit, but God looks at the heart.
In
order to thwart the plan of men, God confuses their language. Churches
of the Stone-Campbell movement do not have the challenge of speaking
different languages. We may utilize different dialects, but ultimately
we have a common language via the Bible and our shared history. Our
problem is not about not understanding one another; our problem is not listening
to one another. God has not confused our communication; we have chosen
to disregard each other.
Our unity is hampered by
shut ears. We have lifted banners of opinion and rallied our allies
behind us. Our focus on making a name for ourselves shuts out the
opportunity for collaboration. The Tower of Comfort consumes some of
us. In verse 8, God does scatter the tower makers. They cannot complete
their task. Restoration churches can achieve the task God has set
before us, scattering the Gospel. We can do it together. We can make a
name for God.

Tower of Babel Written by Alan on 2006-01-22 14:25:55 We have to learn to accept differences of opinion within a congregation. Such differences apparently will always be with us. If we cannot accept those with different opinions then we will have divisions. Accepting different opinions will sometimes require compromise (such as in Acts 15). It will require giving up our rights in order not to offend the conscience of our brother (as in Romans 14). Those things are very hard to do. IMO that is why unity is hard. Alan |
