Page 1 of 3 Gossip is Dangerous Most Christians would agree gossip is
wrong. Some might even say it is sinful. Despite the acknowledgment
of gossip’s inherent evil, most will have participated in it at
some time. What does the Bible say about gossip? What are its
effects? How does it subtly enter our fellowship?
The Bible certainly considers gossip to
be a sin. Romans 1:29 They have become filled with every kind of
wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder,
strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips... and 1 Timothy 5:13
Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from
house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips
and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. God takes gossip
seriously. Proverbs is peppered with sayings about the depth of
effect gossip has on a man. Proverbs 26:22 The words of a gossip are
like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts. Gossip is
not some annoyance in our congregations, it is sin. It worms its way
into the heart of men and is listed alongside some behavior we
consider intolerable.
One of the effects of gossip already
mentioned is its reach into the very being of a person. Gossip warps
and filters every thought. It becomes a gateway of altering our
perception. We do not have the other side of the story or all the
relevant facts and are left to conclusions based on misinformation.
Proverbs 18:17 The first to present his case seems right, till
another comes forward and questions him. A church cannot operate with
misinformation. Relationships wither when suspicion and mistrust
simmer under the surface.
