The disputable items explicitly named in Romans 14-15 include food restrictions and holy days. Paul does not argue to remove the vestiges of the Old Testament law, but to follow them faithfully (Romans 14:5-8) as opposed to legalistically. The gentiles must not automatically call the Jews “legalistic” because of their desire to keep kosher. Certainly, Paul could have told the Jews to break from the law as he did in other parts of the New Testament, but he did not. This was not issue of salvation or theology but preference and faith. The apostle did not order or ask the gentiles to fall in line with Jews’ practices “for the sake of unity.” Each could continue their practices if they did not rub the other party’s nose in it.
