I like what Alexander Campbell said on this subject: "We do not ask them to give up their opinions--we ask them only not to impose them upon others. Let them hold their opinions, but let them hold them as private property. The faith is public property; opinions are, and always have been private property." I think the problems you described arose because of an Age of Enlightenment assumption, that they could apply logic and reason to the scriptures to determine absolute truth on every topic (and the implied corollary, that everyone else would reach the same conclusion). That has proven false, and has led to many divisions. Alan |
