What then is disputable? Perhaps a better starting question is, “Are there disputable subjects?” Romans 14 begins (Rom 14:1), “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.” Yes! The Bible acknowledges disputable matters and gives specific instructions (Romans 14-15) on our attitudes toward our brothers who differ from us. The question, “What falls into the category of disputable?” is not the best place to begin our investigation.  “What should my heart be?” is an appropriate beginning question.

Romans 15:1 bear with the failings of the weak, not to please ourselves
Romans 15:2 please his neighbor, build him up
Romans 15:7 Accept one another, to bring praise to God
Romans 14:13 stop passing judgment on one another, not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way
Romans 14:19 make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification
Romans 14:22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God

What is the tone of Romans 14-15? The passage is about protecting our brothers’ and sisters’ faith. This is more important than indulging in our freedoms (Galatians 5:13) or simply complying with our legalistic viewpoint (Colossians 2:10-23). Our opinion or perspective is not worth defending if we are defeating the faith of someone else.
