Page 4 of 7 Gossip Proverbs 16:28 A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends. Gossip is a unity killer. I was converted in an ICOC church in the 80’s. I had never heard of the “church of Christ” or the Restoration Movement. What I learned about the mainline churches of Christ was that it was a dead denomination full of Pharisees and those who would persecute us. Because of this, I was always suspicious and on guard when visiting a mainline (non-ICOC) church of Christ and did not develop potentially great friendships.
Sometimes when talking with brothers and sisters from other (than ICOC) streams of the Restoration Movement, I find they have some strange notions about the Boston Movement. Some are patently false, some are distortions of the truth and some are outdated. Few notions are from first hand experience but from what someone else said.
Those who buy into gossip will have an arsenal of excuses against working with other congregations and people from other streams of the Restoration Movement. This is probably one of the more subtle wedges within our fellowship and it reaps a tragic toll. If gossip is the cause of disunity, it must be confronted. Proverbs 26:20 Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.
